Copy Writing for Irish Small Businesses: A Guide

Copywriting is the words that ask a reader to act. Learn how to write website, landing page and ad copy that turns Irish visitors into enquiries.

A glossy studio still-life of a glowing speech bubble object representing copywriting for Irish small businesses.

Copywriting means writing the words on a website, a landing page, an ad or an email so the reader does one thing: calls, books or buys. It is not the same as writing blog articles for search, where the aim is to be found by someone who is already looking. The guide to writing for SEO optimization explains how to earn those visitors. Copywriting is the next job: saying the right thing once they arrive.

Key takeaways

  • Copywriting is the writing that asks a reader to act, on a website, landing page, ad or email.
  • Every page carries one offer and asks for one action.
  • Benefits go in the customer’s own words and are backed by proof the business really has.
  • Irish advertising rules require honest claims, VAT-inclusive prices and clearly labelled paid reviews.
  • AI assistants can draft and reword, but a person checks every fact, price and claim first.

What good website copy does#

The first job of a page is to answer the reader’s question before they click away. Imagine Niamh, who runs a small garden design and landscaping business in Naas, County Kildare. Her homepage opened with three paragraphs about the company before it said what she actually does.

Good copy does five things on every page. It answers the reader’s question in the first lines, and it makes one clear offer. It describes benefits in the customer’s own words, using the phrases people use when they ring up.

It also shows proof the business can honestly give, such as photos of finished work, a qualification or a named supplier. Finally, it ends with one clear next step.

The table below shows two small changes Niamh made to her homepage.

ElementBeforeAfter
Homepage headlineWelcomeA garden you can enjoy all year, designed and built in Kildare
Button textSubmitBook a site visit

The new headline answers a question in the reader’s head. The button says what happens next, and booking a visit is a smaller ask than a purchase.

Tip: Read the first line of a page out loud. If it would fit on any competitor’s site, it is not yet specific to this business.

Niamh used that five-point check to rewrite her homepage, and the steps below are the order she worked in. Working through the list in one sitting helps, because a half-written page is hard to judge.

  1. Decide who the page is for. Pick one reader, such as a homeowner with a small back garden in a nearby town. A page written for everyone convinces no one.
  2. List what that reader needs to know. Note down the questions customers ask on the phone. Those questions become the sections of the page.
  3. Choose the one action. An enquiry form, a phone call or a booking. Only one.
  4. Write the headline. Lead with the outcome for the reader, not the company history.
  5. Write the body. Use short paragraphs with one idea each. Say what is included, how the work runs, and what happens after the enquiry. Google states that it aims to reward helpful, reliable, people-first content created to benefit people rather than to gain rankings, and it sets no preferred word count, according to Google Search Central. Length therefore follows the reader’s needs, not a target.
  6. Write the call to action as a sentence a person would say, such as ‘Book a site visit’ or ‘Ask for a quote’. Repeat it once near the top and once at the end.
  7. Read the whole page aloud. Where the reading stumbles, the reader stops.
  8. Check every claim. Delete anything the business cannot prove today.

How to write landing page copy#

A landing page works harder than a homepage, because the visitor already clicked something and expects to find it. Niamh runs a short spring offer and sends paid traffic to a single page for it.

Keep three rules in mind. First, one offer and one action. Second, match the promise in the ad or email word for word, so a heading of ‘spring tidy-up’ appears in both places. Third, keep the form short and ask only what is needed to reply, such as a name, a phone number and a postcode.

Length is not the issue on a landing page. A page that repeats a clear promise and one action beats a long page that offers three services, two discounts and a newsletter.

Note: A mismatch between the ad and the page costs the click and the enquiry. Change one, and change the other on the same day.

Keeping copy honest#

Honesty is not only an ethical choice, because it also keeps the copy simple and easy to defend. In Ireland, the rules on honest advertising are enforced by the CCPC, the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission. CCPC guidance for businesses states that ads must not contain false, misleading or deceptive information about goods or services. It adds that prices must include VAT and any other taxes, with no hidden charges, and that paid-for reviews must not be presented as independent.

For Niamh that means three practical habits. She shows prices that already include VAT and any other taxes. She labels a paid review as a paid review. She keeps proof on file for every claim on the page, such as insurance details or a trade qualification.

The same test applies to copy written by anyone else, including an AI assistant. A superlative such as ‘the best in the county’ comes off the page unless the business can prove it. Where the proof is missing, the line goes.

AI copywriting for Irish SMEs#

Niamh drafted her landing page herself, then asked a general AI assistant for a second version. That is a reasonable way to use the tool.

AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Claude are good at producing a first draft from notes. They can also offer several headline options, shorten a paragraph, or reword a sentence in a different tone.

What they cannot do is know the business. A person still decides the offer, the price, the service area, the timescales and the tone of voice.

Google’s guidance states that generative AI can help research a topic and add structure to original content. That guidance, from Google Search Central, also says it is critical to fact-check and review all AI-generated content before publishing, including titles, meta descriptions, structured data and image alt text. The same guidance warns that using AI to create many pages without adding value for users may breach the scaled content abuse policy.

Watch out: AI drafts often sound confident about details nobody supplied. Check every service, area, timescale and price against what the business actually offers.

How Baikou finds the customer’s own words#

The hardest part of good copy is knowing the words customers actually use. Baikou’s content system takes them from data rather than guesswork.

  • It reads the business’s own Google Search Console data, which shows the searches that already bring people to the site, in the words they typed.
  • Those words go into headlines, service names and buttons, so the page answers the question the visitor arrived with.
  • When a page is seen in search but few people click through, the system flags it, and the headline and opening lines are rewritten first.
  • A person in the business still approves every claim and price before anything goes live.

For a business like Niamh’s, that turns the five-point check above into a routine rather than a one-off rewrite.

Putting copywriting to work in an Irish business#

Copy only stays good when someone owns it. When one person writes the service pages and another writes the ads, the wording soon drifts apart.

Three decisions keep it together. Decide who writes: often the owner writes the service pages, while the person who answers the phone writes the emails and ads, because they hear the customer’s language daily. Decide who approves: one named person signs off every claim and price before it goes live, and checks that prices include VAT and any other taxes. Decide on one tone: keep a single page listing the words the business uses, the words it avoids, and the correct names of its services.

Copy also ages. When an offer, a price or a service area changes, the website, the ad and the email need to change together. A short monthly review of the live pages catches most mismatches before a customer does.

Some businesses reach a point where nobody has time to write or check the pages. Outside help is worth considering when several pages send mixed messages, when a launch is close, or when the same page keeps being rewritten. Services such as SEO and content writing cover page structure, headings and calls to action as well as the wording itself.

Where to start this week#

The quickest improvement for most small business websites is one rewritten page: answer the reader’s first question in the opening line, make one offer, show one piece of real proof, and ask for one clear action. Repeat the same pattern on the next page, keeping the tone and the prices that were already approved. Write down what changed, so the next person can follow the same pattern. Baikou helps Irish businesses with copywriting and content that turns visitors into enquiries.

FAQ#

What is copywriting in simple terms?

Copywriting is the writing that asks a reader to do something, such as call, book, buy or sign up. It appears on pages with a job to do: homepages, service pages, landing pages, ads and emails. It is judged by whether the reader acts, not by how it reads as literature.

What is the difference between copywriting and content writing?

Content writing, such as a blog article or a guide, gives the reader information and often aims to be found in search. Copywriting stays close to the sale and usually asks for one action on the page. The two work as a pair: a helpful article brings a visitor in, and the page copy turns that visit into an enquiry.

Is AI copywriting good enough for a small business website?

It can produce a usable first draft, which saves time for an owner who is short of it. It cannot supply the facts, the prices or the proof, and it cannot decide what the business wants to be known for. Treat every AI draft as something to edit, verify and approve before it goes live.

What should be in a copywriting brief?

Give the writer the reader, the one action, the services included, the prices that can be shown, and any proof the business holds. Add the tone, the words to avoid, and the deadline. Point the writer to the existing pages, so the new copy matches the rest of the site.
